The Crime Survey for England and Wales only measures generic, rather than specific, NPS. Survey estimates in this release are based on the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). While this is the first comparable survey data with pre-coronavirus pandemic data from the year ending March 2020, they are not National Statistics and caution must be taken when using these data. An evaluation of HAT and a set of recommendations were made by the Chief Scientist’s Office. Naloxone is the emergency antidote for overdoses caused by heroin and other opiates. Scotland was the first country in the world to introduce a National Naloxone Programme to help prevent fatal opioid overdoses. The Click and Deliver service provides naloxone to anyone living in Scotland who is over the age of 16 (for injection kit) and 14 (for nasal kit).

Getting professional support can prevent things from getting worse. Speaking to a GP and looking into counselling and therapy are two good places to start. Sometimes, a young person might feel like there is pressure to drink or take drugs when they do not want to. Friends or peers might tell them to do it or make them feel bad if they don’t. They might also feel under pressure to explain why they aren’t joining in. This can be particularly difficult for teenagers and young people, because it’s often a time when ‘fitting in’ feels really important.

There were no statistically significant changes compared with the year ending March 2020 for these other individual drug types (Figure 3). There was no change in the prevalence of powder cocaine use in the last year for people aged 16 to 59 years (2.4%) and 16 to 24 years (5.1%), compared with the year ending March 2020. Data from the CSEW for the year ending March 2023 are not designated as National Statistics and caution should be taken when using these data because of the potential impact of lower response rates on data quality. Drugs and substance misuse are probably one of the biggest concerns for parents and carers. Young people learn about drugs and other substances from a number of places such as the TV, the internet, their friends and even through experimenting themselves. Since estimates began in the year ending December 1995, cannabis has consistently been the most used drug in England and Wales (Figure 1).

Giving, selling or even sharing any controlled drug, such as an ecstasy tablet or cannabis, to or with a friend or anyone else is classed as supplying an illegal drug. Information about drugs, staying safe, penalties for drug offences and new psychoactive substances. Addiction is slightly different to dependence although the words are sometimes used interchangeably. If you are addicted to a drug, there is an excessive craving, and uncontrollable and compulsive use of that drug. People who are addicted still get cravings for drugs such as opioids even after they have reduced them slowly so that they are no longer dependent.

Drug misuse can be harmful to your health in both the short term and the long term. Their services include prevention work in schools, targeted community sessions and one to one support. If your child is caught in possession of a controlled drug, they have committed a criminal offence. It is extremely dangerous to mix different drugs, including taking drugs and alcohol together. Teach your child about the effects of drugs and make sure they’re aware of the risks. Addaction provide a free, confidential webchat service to those in need of addiction support or for their families. If the offence is possession with intent to supply, supply, production or importation the court will determine the offender’s culpability and the harm caused. The maximum sentence depends on whether a person is charged with possession, supply or production, and what class of drug the offence is related to.

The first step to accessing alcohol and drug services is usually to make an appointment with a GP. The GP can discuss what’s happening and refer your child or young person to the right place. If you’re concerned that your child is using alcohol or drugs to cope, it’s important to get some help as soon as you can.
